Are you thinking about becoming an estate agent?

What Defines a Great Estate Agent?

Determining what makes a great estate agent, whether they’re a trainee or a seasoned negotiator, is often a complex issue with no single defining factor. I recall hearing an advertisement aimed at attracting new estate agents with the slogan “Estate agents are not born, they’re trained.” However, in my opinion, it’s quite the opposite—estate agents or salespeople are not trained; they are born for sales. Sales, to me, is an expression of inspiration—a job that stems from within, rather than from external training.

Now, let’s imagine you’re considering a career path in estate agency. I have some good news and some challenging news for you. Estate agency is both the best-paid hard work and the worst-paid easy work. Every action you take throughout the day directly impacts your earnings because success is the ultimate determinant.

During our recruitment events, I intentionally have senior team members ask specific questions to potential estate agents to understand their motivations, goals, and whether they’re a good fit for our team and culture.

When considering a career in estate agency, it’s essential to back yourself and possess enthusiasm, a genuine desire to help people, high standards, and a willingness to put in the hard work required to excel. If you answer yes to these questions, I’d be thrilled to discuss a career in the property industry sector with you.

I once asked the best estate agent I knew—the founder of a highly successful firm with around 70 offices—what made him the best. His answer was simple: “Work incredibly hard, dot every ‘i’ and cross every ‘t’.” Over the years, I’ve found this advice to be sound. When I’ve focused on every detail and dedicated myself fully, the results have been truly exceptional.

So, what can you expect to earn? In your first year as a trainee, your On-Target Earnings (OTE) are around £28,000. Achieving this requires complete dedication to the role and continuous learning. Over the next 2 to 5 years, you can progress from a trainee to a branch manager, with each step bringing increased earnings as your skills and responsibilities grow.

Is there training available? Absolutely. We provide comprehensive training at every stage to ensure our team members are equipped to provide the best service to our clients. However, it’s worth noting that this profession is more about hands-on experience than formal training.

What’s it like being in estate agency? It’s the greatest job in the world! The variety, teamwork, creativity, and focus on driving results for our clients make it truly unique. Despite the challenges, we’re always there to provide solutions and support for our customers.

How can you apply for a role in estate agency? Simply send your CV and a cover letter to my email address or give me a call for a confidential phone interview. Successful candidates will be invited to recruitment events or scheduled for one-on-one interviews.

If this sounds appealing to you, I look forward to hearing from you soon.
